The global campaign ‘One Billion Rising’ began as part of the V-Day movement, which aims to eliminate violence against women worldwide. “RISE FOR FREEDOM” was the theme for OBR 2024. This year, in partnership with NGOs, schools, colleges, and government stakeholders (police departments, tea garden managers, local Panchayats, and community members), Darjeeling Mary Ward Social Centre celebrated the campaign in Kadopani Ground, Bagdogra Tea Estate. During the programme, women’s and youth groups from more than 20 tea gardens adding up to 1300 individuals participated in the champaign. Dr S B Soreng, DIG (Medical) of BSF, was in attendance as the chief guest. The event was organized with focus on addressing gender discrimination and injustice towards women. The program featured motivation and inspirational speeches by dignitaries, along with skits, songs, and dance performances by various organizations and groups. These performances depicted different forms of abuse and injustice encountered by women. The campaign’s primary objectives were to increase community awareness and oppose gender discrimination and injustice towards women. The event tried to uplift and inspire positive change in the community through various mediums, including speeches and creative performances.
